Whether your preferred Halloween decorations are rustic cornstalks and scarecrows, friendly goblins, or ghastly zombies, this is your chance to go all out!

It's hard to go overboard when it comes to Halloween decorations, and some may even argue that an abundance of spooky stuff will keep away the trickers on All Hallows' Eve.

Here are 4 Halloween home decorating ideas.

1. Abandoned House

•    To make your house look like a creepy, abandoned house:
•    Put fake spiders and cobwebs in the windows.
•    Stick broken-glass stickers on the windows.
•    Dim the porch lights with black lights or yellow bulbs.
•    Temporarily hang the porch swing at an angle.
•    Put wood scraps across the windows to make it look like they are boarded up.
•    If the first frost killed your summer flowers, gather the dead stems to make spooky arrangements.
•    Put electric candles in the windows so they flicker.

2. Kid-Friendly Goblin House

Have your children help you with these craft projects:

•    Decorate your porch steps by carving or painting pumpkins.
•    Make white apparitions out of sheets or plastic drop cloths.
•    Construct scarecrows in the shape of jack-o'-lanterns out of used items of clothing, straw, and funny hats.
•    Put in a black light bulb instead of the regular one in the porch light.
•    Put some white paper decorations you made yourself up on the front porch.
•    Decorate a tree with homemade Halloween ornaments, orange lights, and orange streamers for Halloween.
•    Enhance your outdoor space with inflated yard ornaments and battery-operated candles.

3. Gory Scene

Add these spooky decorations to your yard if you'd rather scare people than have them give you candy: tombstones, skeletons, ghouls, monsters, rats, and spiders. Alternatively, you could use spooky props like discarded furniture, clothes, and dolls to create a terrifying setting.

Create tombstones out of scrap wood or cardboard and hang spooky silhouettes or figures from the branches. Last but not least, scare the living daylights out of your guests by running a smoke machine and playing scary music.

4. Harvest House

Use the following decorations to create a picturesque autumn scene:

•    Straw bales
•    Corn Stalks
•    Scarecrows
•    Pumpkins
•    Gourds
•    Corn

Halloween Decorating Safety

No matter what your Halloween theme is, here are some tips for making your yard scary and safe.

Light Strategically

Even though Halloween is all about the dark, visitors should be guided along the path with low lights. The eerie glow of pirate lanterns illuminates the path ahead.

Clear All Paths

If you want to keep trick-or-treaters from tripping over your decorations, move them out of the way and tape down any power cords. Form a barrier with tombstones or straw bales if you have low decorations or dangling wires from trees in your yard.

Avoid Fire

Battery-powered candles work great inside jack-o'-lanterns, and solar or plug-in spotlights can be used to make creepy shadows and light up a path. Don't ever leave burning candles unattended, not even those inside a pumpkin, and avoid having bonfires if your neighborhood sees a lot of trick-or-treaters.

Just For Fun, Make "Tricks"

Make sure that any scary characters, goblins, or spiders hanging around won't touch anyone or cause any harm. Instead of potentially hurting or scaring someone, it's safer to act as if you're trying to trick them.
