There are numerous hair tutorials available that illustrate how to curl hair. As a result, we created a step-by-step guide to show you how to curl your hair with a curling iron in various ways.

With A Curling Iron, Flat Wrap Your Hair

A curling iron is our go-to hair curling tool for this technique. Before using your curling iron, spray it with a heat protectant spray.

This flat wrapping technique produces a large curl with a lot of volumes. The final result will resemble, but the curl's tightness will be determined by the width and thickness of your sections. We recommend using wider sections for this technique. The key to getting this curl is to keep the hair flat against the curling iron barrel and not twist it. You'll need to adjust your hands each time you go around the curling iron to keep the hair flat against the barrel; otherwise, the hair will naturally want to twist around the barrel. This curl type is perfect for fine hair that needs more volume.

To protect your hair from the heat, mist a vertical section with a thermal heat spray, then evenly distribute the product with a wide-tooth comb. Choose whether you want your hair to curl toward your face or away from your face. While wrapping the section around your curling iron, keep it flat. Keep in mind not to twist your hair around the iron.

Continue wrapping the hair around the iron until the ends are reached. Curl only the last 2" or so to achieve a more natural look.

Lazy Curl

This technique creates a loose wave with your curling iron. Wrap the hair around the iron halfway down, then switch wrapping directions for the rest of the section. The effect of a more relaxed wave can be achieved by changing the direction of the curl and leaving the ends out.

To protect the hair, start with the first section and mist it with a thermal heat spray from at least 6" away. With your thumb and index finger, gather the section and raise it to 90 degrees. Place the curling iron in front of the section, with the barrel behind it. Face the section up and flat wrap around the iron while holding it (do not twist the hair around the barrel when doing a flat wrap). After you've finished the flat wrap, hold the section and roll the iron close to the scalp, allowing the section to fully heat before moving on.

Remove the barrel from the hair while holding the section and turn it so the barrel is not in front of the section. Repeat the process of flat wrapping, rolling the iron, and closing the iron in the same spot where your last curl was made. Once you've reached the end of the section, comb through it with your hand and finger to separate the curls.

The end result will be a natural-looking lazy curl. Apply a flexible hold hairspray to finish.
