Everyone's interpretation of Memorial Day is unique to themselves. People will frequently celebrate the beginning of summer on this day as a way to mark the occasion. Cookouts, family reunions, and a three-day weekend are all a lot of fun, but they have the potential to detract from the significance of what the holiday actually represents.
Don't let the celebration of good food and time spent with loved ones distract you from remembering and honouring the valiant men and women who gave their lives protecting our nation.
This Memorial Day, Remember Those Who Have Died Through These 5 Activities:
Attend A Parade
On Memorial Day, a number of communities host parades, and some of these events even culminate with memorial services. Participating in the Memorial Day celebration in your community is something you should do even if you are busy getting ready for barbecues or unwinding with friends and family.
Buy A Poppy
Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) collect monetary contributions for the purchase of poppies in the days leading up to Memorial Day. The poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae is largely responsible for giving the poppy its significance in relation to Memorial Day.
Since 1924, veterans who are disabled or otherwise in need have been working in VA hospitals to assemble Buddy Poppies. If you buy one, not only will you be honouring Memorial Day, but your donation will also go toward helping to maintain local, state, and national programmes that provide service and rehabilitation to veterans.
Adorn The Occasion With Flags
Bring out the patriotic colours for this year's Memorial Day celebration by donning red, white, and blue. On the holiday that honours our nation's war dead, it is customary to lay flags on the graves of service members who have died in the line of duty. Then why not bring that tradition into your own home and decorate your house and lawn with stars and stripes.
Another custom calls for flying the flag at a height of half-staff from the time the sun rises until noon local time. Therefore, if you own a flag pole, you should think about participating in the tradition this year.
Take Part In The Remembrance Ceremonies That Are Held On A National Level
In an effort to restore and honour Memorial Day as the sacred and noble holiday it was meant to be, the National Moment of Remembrance, which was established by Congress, asks Americans to pause in an act of national unity on Memorial Day at 3 o'clock local time, regardless of where they are. This is done in an effort to restore and honour Memorial Day as the holiday it was meant to be (duration: one minute).
The decision to hold the ceremony at three in the afternoon was made because that is the time when the majority of people in the country celebrate their freedom by taking advantage of the day off work.
Thank A Veteran For Their Service
Memorial Day is a time to remember and honour the service members who have died while serving our country. However, it is also a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude to those service members, both past and present, who are currently among us. Please express your gratitude to them for everything they've done to keep our country and our freedoms safe.
