Athleisure has emerged as a subculture because workout wear has become so aesthetically pleasing. However, workout apparel does more than just boost self-esteem; it also boosts efficiency in the gym.

Workout clothes should be comfortable enough that you don't even notice you're wearing them. You're much more likely to give up, feel self-conscious, or feel restricted if your workout attire isn't conducive to your goals.

Here is a rundown of some of the features to look for in a good set of workout clothes for women.

1. Suitable Activity

While it's true that you can get a good workout in any old clothes, there are some types of physical activity that are better experienced when dressed for them.

Padded cycling shorts, for instance, can greatly improve the comfort of long bike rides, but they aren't always the most practical choice for running or group exercise classes. Similar to how running shorts are inappropriate for cycling because of their lack of padding and propensity to bunch and chafe, cycling shorts also have neither.

If you want to be as comfortable as possible, it's best to stick with garments that are made for the pursuit at hand. We'll talk about how this "rule" can be applied to footwear in a bit.

2. Comfy

Workout clothes should not restrict movement, allow air to circulate to prevent overheating, and be "forgettable" once worn. Working out can be less enjoyable if you're bothered by discomforts like thick seams, restrictive or tight sleeves, and a back that rides up when you lean forward. Try on your workout clothes to make sure they fit and are comfortable.

3. Fabrics That Wick

You can find workout clothing made from a wide range of materials, from tried-and-true cotton to the latest in scientifically engineered synthetic fibres that wick away sweat but keep out the rain.

Wicking describes a fabric's capacity to pull moisture away from the skin and channel it through the fabric, where it can evaporate more quickly. This aids in maintaining dry, comfortable skin.

Natural fibres like cotton and wool aren't ideal for making wickers. Cotton clothing acts like a sponge and soaks up any moisture it comes into contact with. Cotton is a great fabric for many reasons, but not when it's wet because it becomes clingy, heavy, and cold. This places the cold, wet fabric against the skin, which both chills and irritates. Sometimes, cramping occurs as a result of a gradual decrease in body temperature.

Wicking is a strength of many synthetic and so-called technical fabrics. Wearing wicking materials is a smart move if you plan on doing any kind of sweat-inducing exercise, such as running, cycling, hiking, etc.

4. Anti-Microbial

Have you ever noticed that your workout clothes, no matter how often you wash them, smell as if you never wore them? It's not that your workout clothes are dirty again; rather, there are microbes stuck in the fibres that washing won't get rid of. It is possible to eliminate these microorganisms by soaking your clothes in white wine vinegar, but this is not very convenient. A more viable option is to invest in garments that have anti-microbial properties. Reduced formation of odours that persist through regular washing is a major benefit of these specially treated garments.

5. High Visibility

A nighttime outdoor workout calls for clothes that stand out against the darkness. The use of fluorescent paint and reflective tape is a must. Wearing all black to your nighttime workouts may make you look slimmer, but if you aren't visible to other drivers, it could end up having the opposite effect.

Thus, these are the features to seek out when shopping for new workout clothes, though it is also crucial to get the rest of your workout gear just right.
