Here are some of our best hints for washing, drying, and ironing silk. We'll go over the best ways to wash silk, care for silk, and treat silk in this article. Let's begin by defining silk and describing where it comes from.
WHAT IS SILK?
Incredibly beautiful and opulent, silk exudes a radiant sheen. Natural silk drapes well, is easy to work with, and can be dyed. After wearing a silk garment, you'll never want to wear anything else again, according to me. Silk, in addition to its aesthetic appeal, has a wonderfully airy and supple hand when worn against the skin.
100 percent natural silk is made from the cocoon wires of the silk butterfly larva. Silk is regarded as long-lasting due to its chemical-free production and the fact that it is entirely renewable resource.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SILK
Silk clothing provides insulation when needed, but also allows for rapid evaporation of heat when not in use. To maximize the cooling/heating effect, we recommend purchasing silk garments with a loose, comfortable fit.
Silk doesn't need to be washed as frequently as other materials because it naturally removes mites, dust, and other particles. A few hours of exposure to the elements is all that is needed to properly age your clothes. After weathering, we recommend spraying the garments with ecological linen water for a fresh scent.
SILK CARE TIPS
- Weathering a garment can often be sufficient to give it a new lease on life. To keep a garment looking new, a quick steaming is a good idea. Steamers do more than just remove wrinkles; they also eliminate bacteria.
- Silk should not be exposed to products containing alcohol, such as perfume and hairspray.
- When left exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period of time, clothing can fade and turn yellow.
- Never use water to try and remove a stain. Where the stain wash has been applied, the color will begin to fade. Instead, give the garment a good wash.
HOW TO WASH SILK
Instructions on how to wash silk and clothing
- The type of silk fabric and garment determine whether or not the garment can be washed in water.
- Only dry clean should be recommended on occasions when washing clothes is not an option. Afterwards, take the garment to a dry cleaner that has been certified as environmentally friendly so it can be cleaned properly.
- Hand washing with enzyme-free detergent works well for simple garments like tee shirts and dresses without drapes.
- To wash, we recommend using a washing machine. If you have a modern washing machine, using the silk program is preferable to hand-washing the garment. After washing, most of the water has evaporated, so you can hang the garment on a hanger to dry without having to use a drying rack.
- Colors should always be washed separately.
- Laundry bags are required.
- To dry the garment, place it on a hanger.
HAND WASH
If you must wash the garment by hand, be careful. Do not twist the garment to remove excess water and do not rub stains. When it comes to silk, think of it as if you were wearing it in your hair. Before hanging the garment on a hanger, use a towel to remove any excess water. A few drops of vinegar can aid in the removal of stains. Washing by hand or in the washing machine is no problem with this method.
SILK CAN BE IRONED, BUT HOW?
Assistance with silk garment and product care
- Silk can usually be ironed. When ironing silk, we recommend using a cotton towel to protect the silk from the iron. Preferably, iron the garment from the inside out.
- Using low heat as recommended in the care label, iron the silk on the back rather than directly on the silk surface.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF STEAMING SILK?
- A steamer can be used instead of a pressing machine if the seams don't need to be pressed.
- The use of a steamer is simple (to bring and care for the garment).
- Using a steam iron, heat the garment on a hanger. To smooth out the fabric's surface, gently pull and steam the garment.
- Both the inside and outside of a garment can be steamed at the same time.
- Steamers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. When it comes to design, "The Steamery" steamers are hard to beat. In our studio, we put them to good use.
