There is nothing like the simplicity of a white T-shirt as a canvas. You can rock it on its own, add a splash of color with accessories, hide it under a sweater, or—if you're the protagonist of a certain novel by André Aciman—leave it on the dock before you go for an impromptu swim in Italy in 1983. Hundreds upon hundreds of plain white tees can be found.

Best White Work Shirts for Men & Women

Some of our favorite fashionable, high-quality shirts for both men and women, available in a range of sizes and prices to suit most budgets.

J.Crew Classic-Fit Cozy Gauze Shirt ($90)

Those in the know should definitely purchase this J.Crew top. J.Crew's button-downs were singled out as being particularly well suited for plus sizes due to their classic fit, which is slightly longer and has some extra room throughout. For a more modern take, try this one with its crinkled, airy fabric, which makes it stand out from the crowd a little.

It has a more tailored, less boxy look than what Richardson typically goes for. Since it's longer, she can tie the ends for a cropped look or do a half-tuck. Shop now.

Everlane The Way-Short Shirt ($80)

This cropped boxy Everlane shirt is a modern take on the timeless button-down (and calls for a pair of ultra-high-waisted jeans). We like that the length is "cropped but not too cropped," so it doesn't overwhelm a short stature. We also appreciate the tailored fit at the shoulders and the way the seam hits at the upper arm. Additionally, regardless of whether the shirt is buttoned all the way or not, it still looks neat and put together. Shop now.

J.Crew Broken-In Short-Sleeve White T-shirt ($37)

The J.Crew Broken-In Short-Sleeve White T-Shirt was perfect in every way: it was the right size, was skillfully made, and felt soft and airy. The J.Crew shirt was a hit with everyone, which is saying a lot given the wide range of personal tastes represented in the group. Among the shirts we tried, the J.Crew T-shirt received the most praise from everyone. This was the case even when compared to the Lady White Co. shirt, which retails for over 1.5 times as much and is available in far fewer sizes and styles.

Considering its low cost, the J.Crew shirt is of superb quality. This T-shirt is thin, but the cotton has a close weave, so it appears white and opaque (in testing, however, some shirts were transparent enough to show nipples, which is simply not the vibe). The bottom hem is twisted and the fabric isn't as sturdy as that of other white T-shirts we tried, but those are only noticeable if you're looking for them. However, we did not find any loose threads or pilling and the stitching was even and straight. Shop now.

Bonobos Soft Everyday Tee ($35)

The Bonobos Soft Everyday Tee is not just a comfortable and well-made T-shirt, but also one of the most diverse in terms of design (it comes in a variety of necklines and lengths). As a result of its boxier silhouette, it was a favourite among some of our testers.

We found that the Bonobos shirt allowed for the most variety in terms of length, style, and cut when compared to the other shirts we like, including those from J.Crew. When it comes to sizes smaller than XXL, you have more options with this brand than with any other we recommend. You can choose between a crew neck or V-neck, pockets or no pockets, Slim or Standard, and regular or short lengths.

In terms of quality, fit, and comfort, the Bonobos were singled out as the clear winners. Additionally, all of the testers agreed that the Bonobos was more well-made and stretchier (and thus more comfortable) than some of the tees we tried that cost twice as much. One of our testers said the shirt was so comfortable and stylish that he'd wear his Bonobos with slacks and head out to a nice restaurant. Shop now.
