Trainers were the edgy supporting cast that gave Birkenstocks a run for their money in 2022's shoe epic. Even though celebrities like Kaia Gerber and Kendall Jenner opted for a cushioned German footbed, last year's cult sneakers were still everywhere to be seen. Then there was the Gucci x Adidas collaboration, which resulted in the ubiquitous appearance of the latter's signature red and green stripes on the sidewalks and streets. And somewhere in there, a tidal wave in the shape of Nike's swoosh hit the internet, causing the Jacquemus website to go down multiple times after the news of the collaboration between the two brands broke. In a nutshell, the training industry was booming.
Biggest Trainer Trends To Buy in 2023
When will the 2023 schedule for trainers be released? In this article, we've compiled a selection of noteworthy trends for the upcoming season.
Retro Kicks
I predict that the Adidas Samba will be a major trainer trend setter in the coming year. In the latter half of 2022, the retro, football-inspired kick made its way onto the feet of It girls like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Emily Ratajkowski, and has since had a significant impact on the trainer scene. It's currently a part of every inspiring outfit I've saved on Instagram. The three stripes, round toe, and tan rubberized sole are all telltale signs of the Adidas Gazelle, after which Gucci based a luxury capsule collection. However, Loewe's update on classic '70s sneakers was a hit at fashion week, so pick your poison. They are perfect for the preppy trend that seems unlikely to fade away any time soon. Shop now.
Sustainable Kicks
Sustainable fashion is a growing priority for the fashion industry, and designers are no exception. Although vegan sneakers have been around since at least 2023, they are now increasingly mainstream. Look at the S/S 23 runway show by Cecilie Bahnsen, where many of the dresses were accessorised with sneakers. Trainers have always been a staple in our outfits. That level of ease "really speaks to the brand," Bahnsen tells Footwear News. Bahnsen describes her collaboration with Asics to design a line of eco-friendly sneakers in the same interview. Bahnsen argued for recycling and upcycling by making a limited edition run of 10 "one-of-a-kind trainers" from fabrics that had been in stock but were now discontinued. Of course, this is just one way that the latest styles in trainers can be made to last longer. Whether through the use of alternative materials like mushroom or grape leather, or through the development of techniques that reduce pollution during production, the textile industry is constantly innovating to better serve society while also protecting the environment. Hiking Kicks
Athletic shoes for sports are constantly developing. To begin with, they appeared in the form of running shoes; envision Asics to get the idea. Then, they morphed into basketball shoes from the 1980s. However, perhaps it's the season, but hiking trainers have recently become popular. Brands like Salomon, which have a rugged, outdoorsy vibe, are poised to become the next big thing in 'dad' trainers. The Nike CdG Air Mada, which I'm seeing a lot of, is going to be extremely valuable by the time we settle into 2023, in my opinion. Shop now.
