Tennis sensation Naomi Osaka’s KINL is finally here after months of anticipation. We’ve been waiting for the introduction of the melanin-focused skincare product since the tennis star announced it in May. Now that it’s available, it checks all of our beauty boxes: it’s cost-effective, inclusive, and protective.

Osaka said earlier this year that a dearth of education about sunscreen and choices for darker skin tones drove her to launch the company. She collaborated with dermatologist Dr. Naana Boakye to bring her vision to life. She told Business of Fashion, “This is a public health necessity.” “I used to tell people that I didn’t need sunscreen—but even if you have melanin, you need to take care of your skin, and that’s something I’m very passionate about.”

We tried the entire collection now that it’s arrived. Continue reading for more information and to hear our candid opinions.

The Full Collection

The Golden Rays Sunscreen SPF 50 + Melanated Tint ($20), arguably the collection’s headliner, is the solution to your mineral sunscreen issues. Osaka wasn’t joking when she claimed she wanted a sunscreen that worked for people with darker skin tones. The lightweight mineral sunscreen has an uniform brown hue that prevents the all-too-common white cast on your skin.

The anti-oxidant-rich sunscreen is also water-resistant and sweat-proof, with a natural matte finish. The skin barrier-repairing niacinamide completes the tinted sun protection mix, proving that this SPF truly does it all.

How Can You Tell If Your Skin Barrier Has Been Damaged? (And What to Do About It)
The Hydrating Eye Cream ($15) is next, and it’s designed for sensitive and delicate eye areas. Thin under-eye skin is just as susceptible to sun damage as the rest of your face when exposed to the outdoors. The rich cream contains red sea algae, which protect against UV rays while also reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles.

On the other side, the Hydrating Golden Mist ($15) is a must-have after-sun product. With anti-inflammatory aloe vera and calendula, the body mist soothes and heals burnt skin. Hemp seed oil is another important component, as it hydrates and seals in moisture. It doubles as a room spray if you really like the summertime, coconut, and orange aroma.

You may purchase each item individually or get the Golden Ritual Skincare Set ($50), which includes all three products as well as a nourishing lip balm.

The Review

The Golden Rays Sunscreen is both light and dark in color. The outcome is warm, matte skin after completely rubbing in two pumps of sunscreen. I’d recommend starting with one pump and gradually increasing it until it’s completely absorbed. Because I’m not quite as active as Naomi Osaka, I can’t attest to the product’s sweatproofness. But, unlike most sunscreens, it stayed matte throughout the day.

The Hydrating Eye Cream came as a pleasant surprise. I believe it demonstrates how little we (or perhaps just me) think about the eye area. Eye creams aren’t usually the first thing that comes to mind when I think about sun protection. The skin around your eyes, on the other hand, is just as vital as the rest of your face and even more fragile, so it’s an excellent complement to any sun protection regimen. The cream itself is quite thick and dense, as well as odorless. It’s moisturizing and melts into the skin, as the name implies. It also has a relaxing and opulent vibe to it. If a KINL skin moisturizer was on the horizon, I’d be all over it.. (hint, hint).

Finally, I put the Hydrating Balm and Body Mist to the test. You can’t buy the balm alone, but it’s a nice extra to have on hand if you buy the entire KINL package. The mist is a super-calming, light-weight spray with a wonderful scent. Because I’ve spent the majority of my time lightly spraying it around the room, I enjoy that it doubles as a room mist.
