About Groupon

There was no Groupon just two years ago. However, the online deal-of-the-day startup turned down Google's $6 billion buyout offer less than a fortnight ago. Six billion dollars (with a capital B) is a significant endorsement of Groupon and other value-driven marketing channels.

The rumoured Google-Groupon merger caused quite a stir. The real marketing storey, and the driving force behind Groupon's success, is "the new normal." The new normal is that it's now socially acceptable for someone—anyone—to look for added value (a bargain) before making a purchase. Furthermore, there is no longer a stigma associated with bargain hunting (bargains, savings, added value opportunity). And in this new standard, sharing the buying opportunity with friends is an important dynamic.

It's a social phenomenon that affects people from all walks of life, including those in the upper middle and upper classes. Take a look at the Groupon example once more. Groupon's social media audience is primarily made up of young, educated female customers with money to spend on deals in the health, fitness, and beauty industries.

Although Groupon (or digital coupons in general) isn't for every type of healthcare, we've seen deals for vision care, wellness/spas, hospital programmes, fitness centres, dentistry, chiropractic, and a variety of other services.

In each of the hundreds of local markets it serves, Groupon offers one deal per day. When a certain number of people use the offer, it becomes available to everyone in that group. No one gets the deal of the day if the minimum number is not met.

The enormous popularity of the concept among consumers is further proof of the new normal. Hundreds of other sites in the United States and around the world have copied the concept of shared deals and added value. (The largest is LivingSocial.) In this fiercely competitive Internet space—one that didn't even exist a few years ago—Groupon controls 70% of the market and is still expanding.
